JO CAPITALICIDE – IRON DOGS

¿Hay algo más brutal que una buena portada de un disco de heavy metal? Sí, que el disco que contiene en su interior suene igual de brutal. Y este es el caso de IRON DOGS, esta joven banda canadiense de Heavy Metal que tanto con Cold Bitch como con Free & Wild, se ha ganado una posición de honor en el altar de los indispensables. No en vano fueron apadrinados en su día en el blog Band of the Week de Fenriz.
En Static Age hemos podido charlar con Jo Capitalicide, bajista, guitarrista y cantante del grupo, músico hecho a sí mismo, que nos ha hablado del grupo, de su sonido y, como no, de Canada.
Háblanos de Iron Dogs. ¿Cómo comenzó el grupo?
Empezamos en 2011 con la intención de grabar unas cuantas canciones para divertirnos y la cosa siguió adelante gracias al interés de la gente.
¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias?
Probablemente las mismas bandas de metal que el resto de gente que conoces. Yo creo que el primer LP de Vice Human o los primeros Gotham City. Esas bandas hicieron las cosas a su manera.
Vuestro sonido es crudo y real. Defendéis a muerte el sonido single coil de Fender. ¿Por qué esta decisión? ¿Por qué es tan importante para vosotros?
Las sonido Stratocaster single coil es grandioso. Muy atípico del heavy metal porque no es muy heavy. Creo que es lo que nos da nuestro sonido, además de que hacemos dive bombs usando una barra de tremolo genérica de Stratocaster. ¡Esto no lo hacía nadie desde los 70!
Los sintetizadores de Free & Wild añaden mucha frescura al sonido. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre los sintetizadores y el heavy metal?
¡Me encantan! ¡Añaden más texturas! Bandas como Vavel, Black Hole, Omega, White Spirit... Me gustan mucho más que los pianos y órganos.
Has tocado muchos géneros (punk, heavy metal, incluso gótico...) y tienes otros proyectos paralelos, pero todos comparten algo: los 80. ¿Por qué te gusta esta década?
No es que trate de sonar como los 80. Yo creo que surge más bien de mi rechazo a aprender estilos de música modernos. Quizás me he recluido de ello no viendo la televisión, ni escuchando la radio o saliendo de casa muy a menudo.
Cuéntanos ahora un poco sobre la escena en Canada. Hay un montón de bandas tocando ruido del bueno. ¿Es Canada una especie de paraíso del heavy metal?
Por lo menos en esta parte del país, hay un montón de bandas famosas en Toronto como Cauldron, Skullfist, Midnight Malice, Axxion, Chainbreaker, Manacle, Droid, Call of The Wild, etc. Montreal también tiene bandas como Metalian, Cauchemar, Abyssed... Y aquí en Ottawa tenemos a Occult Burial, Regret y Barrow Wight. Luego, por supuesto, están todas las viejas bandas que ya están fuera de onda.
¿Cómo percibes el underground/DIY? ¿Crees que se está haciendo más fuerte gracias a las redes sociales?
Creo que la facilidad de acceso que proporciona Internet ahoga a algunas bandas en un mar de otras que no merecen la pena. Por ejemplo: bandas DIY que se lo curran, graban discos y se van de gira que quizás son menos conocidas que otras insustanciales que “espamean” a todo el mundo para que paguen por verles en alguna batalla de bandas.
¿Veremos alguna vez a Iron Dogs en Europa?
No es muy probable. ¡Lo siento!
¿Qué consejo darías a un amigo que vaya a empezar en un grupo?
Que trabaje muy duro. Que sea su prioridad. Tienes que preguntarte constantemente: “¿Qué puedo hacer para beneficiar a mi banda ahora mismo?”.

Tell us about Iron Dogs. How did you start?
We started in 2011 with the intention of recording a few songs for fun and then things spiraled from that due to interest from people.
Which are your main influences?
Probably the same metal bands as everyone else you know. I would for sure say the first Vice human LP or early Gotham City. Those bands did things their own way.
Your sound is raw and real. You defend using only single coil Fenders. Why this decision? Why is it so important to you?
The single coil strats sound great. Very atypical for heavy metal cause its not really heavy. I think it gives us our own sound. Plus we're doing guitar dive bombs using just a generic Stratocaster Tremolo bar! Bands haven't done that since the 70's!
It’s refreshing to hear some synths in Free & Wild. What do you think of synths and heavy metal?
I really love them! Adds more texture! Bands like Vavel, Black Hole, Omega, White Spirit. I like them more then Pianos or Organs.
You have played with many genres (punk, heavy metal, even goth…) and you have other projects, but they all share one thing: the 80’s. Why is this decade so special to you?
Not really trying to sound like the 1980's. I think it stems from my refusal to acknowledge modern styles of music. Perhaps I've sheltered myself from it be not watching television, listening to the radio or leaving my house and going out in public too often.
Now, tell us a bit about the scene in Canada. There are many bands playing really cool shit. Is Canada a heavy metal paradise?
As far as this part of the country,there's alot of known bands in Toronto making names for themselves like Cauldron, Skullfist, Midnight Malice, Axxion, Chainbreaker, Manacle, Droid, Call of The Wild,etc. Montreal's got bands like Metalian, Cauchemar, Abyssed and here in Ottawa we got Occult Burial, Regret and Barrow Wight. Then of course there's all the old bands that are out of the loop.
How do you feel the underground/DIY? Do you think it’s becoming bigger/stronger thanks to social media?
I think the ease of access that the internet provides drowns some bands in a sea of ones not worthy. Like for example: hard working DIY bands that tour and release record and are involved maybe less known then some clueless bands that spam everybody online to come see them play at a pay-to-play battle of the bands.
Are we going to see Iron Dogs on tour in Europe?
Not likely. Sorry!
What advice would you give to a friend who starts a band?
Work really hard.Make it a priority. Ask yourself constantly "What can I do to benefit my band right now?"
