Relapse Records unearthed one of the bands that helped bring Death Metal back from the dead. In 1997, the label signed NILE, a South Carolina-based act founded by guitarist Karl Sanders in 1993…Following a pair of self-released demos and one EP, the band’s debut LP Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, released in April of 1998, combined Sanders fascination with Egyptian culture and lore with the ferocity of time-honored death metal. By adding an extra layer of technicality to the riff-structures, along with the relatively unexplored world of the Pharaohs, NILE played an indispensible role in making the genre feel fresh again. They still do and that´s fantastic.

LUCIFERICON has returned after a four-year gap with their latest EP, “Brimstone Altar”. While only three songs long, this collection of occult-themed Death Metal attacks with ferocity. Jagged, swirling tremolo riffing and a steady, mid-tempo gallop are the primary focus here, and given that the material is given an epic edge with their extended lengths it allows for the occult atmosphere to drip from the tracks. Great material.
