As Midwestern post-punk/post-metal outfit DEEPER GRAVES prepares to release its second album,The Colossal Sleep, through Disorder Recordings in January, the record’s lead single has been issued. An official video for “Distant Fires” is now playing exclusively at Everything Is Noise, as preorders and more for the album are made available.
DEEPER GRAVES is Jeff Wilson of Chrome Waves, Contrition, and formerly of Nachtmystium, Wolvhammer, Abigail Williams, and more. Further removed from the metal output he is known for releasing over the past two decades or more, with DEEPER GRAVES, Wilson creates lush soundscapes and slow-paced rock movements that venture further into the realms of his post-punk, shoegaze, and alternative influences, with elements tracing to foundational acts like Bauhaus and Joy Division.
The Colossal Sleep delivers six new songs which further develop and expand upon the melodic and melancholic foundations built on DEEPER GRAVES’ Open Roads debut, with Jeff Wilson handling vocals, guitars, bass, synth/keys, programming, and all other instrumentation. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Wilson at the Disorder Recordings headquarters, the record is completed with cover art by Awo Prosatega and layout by Wilson, and features guest vocals from Heath Rave (Lotus Thrones, ex-Wolvhammer) on the tracks “Escape Velocity” and “Corridors.”
Wilson reveals, “On the last album, I leaned pretty heavily on synth and ambience, so on the new one, I wanted to bring a little more crunch to the songs and primarily expand in the vocal department. I think this album closer is a good representation of all those ideas and look forward to bringing these songs to a live scenario in 2022.”
Everything Is Noise writes in part alongside their premiere of the “Distant Fires” video, “The winter landscapes seen in the music video are perfectly complemented by the reverb-rich guitars and the cold, swelling synths. This single is more of a slow burner (a slow freezer rather) type of track that is the musical equivalent to trudging through a snowstorm that isn’t necessarily too cold nor torturous; the pleasant and enjoyable kind of winter storm to be clear. “Distant Fires” really feels as if it is a relieving, distant source of warmth that you’re slowly approaching after a long, cold journey...”
